It helps to drop the pump attaching bolts through the holes while the pump bolts are tightened. This provides constant oil flow and pressure any time the engine is running. They have a variety of uses, including pulling steels and frictions out of clutch drums and cases. By bending the ends over, you can use them to reach inside clutch drums or into the transmission case to pull steels and friction plates out. They may also interchange within different drums in the same transmission, so make sure you return them to their original location during the rebuilding process.
Micrometers are another necessary measuring device. Most transmission shift kits allow the installer to eliminate this function and provide the operator with full manual control of the unit using the shift selector, but, otherwise, it retains its normal automatic function. Pictured here is a tool that allows removing the shift shaft seal without removal of the parking linkage. This may not always be the case, but is the general rule for this particular transmission. In order to install the direct drum, you must carefully align the friction in the center of the case. Because it is mounted to the converter shell, it is always moving oil when the engine is in operation. The clutch is on, or applied, at low engine and vehicle speeds, when the most slippage between the turbine and impeller occurs. Excessive planetary endplay and worn thrust washers can cause noise and early component failure if they are placed back into service. An air ratchet or an impact gun speeds up the rebuilding process considerably, but never use them to tighten fasteners because most of them are threaded into the aluminum case. You tap the hole and install the set screw available from any hardware store. A backing plate is used in a clutch drum, behind the last friction plate. You must plug the exhaust hole in the valve body also designated. This is great for a low-performance daily-driven car, but not the best for racing or a high-performance application.
