Chances are you won't need it if you do your homework and follow my advice below. I toyed with getting a V10 T'reg a few years back. Regardless of the exact cause, the fact is that symptoms usually aren't noticeable until the car is out of warranty. Pull the valve cover up and slightly towards you during removal. Do you need top of the line Nokian? Also check the measuring blocks on the injectors for an indication of the condition of the camshaft, injectors and compression. With just a few mods you can turn your Touareg into a real bruiser of a vehicle.
Optional on Passat but not suggested: if you are planning on removing the intake manifold for cleaning, remove it before the valve cover to get a little more clearance.
